E. Outreach Activities
WLPO/WAJK/WLWF participated in job shadowing, station tours, career days, job fairs and events in the community. Staff discusses the education required for broadcasting and all the different job opportunities that are available working in radio.
Job Shadowing
Students are able to work with staff members to learn about the operation of a radio station, the skills required and the availability of radio careers they are interested in pursuing.

Internship
Area college students have the opportunity to participate in an internship during school breaks to learn skill required to have a career in broadcasting.
Waubonsee Community College student completed an internship with News Director and Reporter starting in October 2009 and May 2010.
Station Tours
WLPO/WAJK/WLWF encourages interested youth community groups to tour the station and staff interacts with the students and gives information about broadcasting covering all the different jobs in radio. One of the highlights is showing them how commercials are made and taping their voices.

Career Days
Station staff gave presentations to students about the operation of a radio station, the skills required, the importance of an education and availability of radio careers.
Illinois Broadcasters Association and Illinois State University – Participant/Sports Director. Communication students from all Illinois 4-year universities participated in a day of learning and discovery in broadcasting, October 2, 2009
Illinois Valley Community College High School Journalism Contest – Participant/News Director. Group of high school students wrote a news story and were judges based on information submitted by judges. News Director was a judge and talked to students about a career in broadcasting, February 26, 2010
Illinois Valley Community College Careers on Wheels – Participant/Vice President of Operations. Junior and senior high school students participated in a remote broadcast and discussed careers in radio, March 19, 2010
Serena High School Career Day – Participant/On-Air Personality. Presented a DVD to 200 high school students showing a tour of the station. Followed with a question and answer period with students regarding a broadcasting career, March 17, 2010
Illinois Valley Community College Journalism Class – Participant/News Director. Spoke to students on how to prepare for a career in journalism, specifically broadcasting, May 6, 2010.
Community Events
Station Staff participates in community events throughout the year to promote station awareness and to talk to potential station employees and customers.
Northwest School Read Across America – Participants/On-Air Personality & Copywriter/Production. Read to students and discussed the importance of reading in all jobs, March 1, 2010
Easter Seals Telethon – Participants/On-Air Personality & Vice President Operations. Hosted telethon to benefit children with disabilities, April 17, 2010
Illinois Valley Cellular’s Dancing with the Stars – Participant/On-Air Personality. Emceed the competition that benefited local charities, May 16, 2010
Streator Youth Baseball – Participant/On-Air Personality. Received a donation from the White Sox organization for youth baseball fields left in shambles from a tornado in June 5, 2010. WAJK radio station was recognized by the White Sox organization, June 15, 2010
A Night Without a Home – Participant/On-Air Personalities. Spent the night in Washington Park in Ottawa, IL, to raise awareness of homeless in the Illinois Valley. Speakers discussed the need for assistance to the agencies that help the homeless, June 24, 2010
Job Fairs
Participated in four career fairs during the year to discuss possible job opportunities available at WLPO/WAJK/WLWF.
Illinois Broadcasters Association – October 2, 2009. Participant/Human Resources. Attended the IBA Career Fair at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Over 250 college juniors and seniors from fourteen Illinois colleges and universities along with members of the general public visited this event. Students received awards from Illinois Broadcasters Association and visited radio and television representatives.
National Association of Broadcasters Foundation (NABEF), Broadcast Education Association (BEA) and the Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) Career Day – April 14, 2010. Participant/Radio Consultant. Attended the Career Day in Las Vegas, Nevada. This Career Fair promotes diversity and increases the pool of qualified applicants in the broadcast industry. We received six resumes and one air check demo tape.
Illinois Valley Community College “Job Fair 2010” – April 15, 2010. Participant/Human Resources. The job fair at IVCC attracts not only students, but a wide range of interested candidates from all around the listening area. We received 36 resumes or applications and had 53 visitors stop to discuss the job opportunities with WLPO/WAJK/WLWF.
National Association of Broadcasters Foundation/University of North Texas Media Sales Institute in Denton, Texas – April 2010. Participant/Radio Consultant. Interviewed recent college graduates who are interested in careers in electronic media advertising sales (radio, television, internet and cable ad sales). Students are required to make presentations to media sales and management professionals as their “final exam.” We also spoke to the students about job opportunities at WLPO/WAJK/WLWF.
